CASE STUDY
Timber Resin Repairs
Barn Conversion near Staplecross
The ancient barn was constructed with an oak timber frame.
CavityTech Systems Ltd was asked to inspect the barn with a view to treating the timbers against active common furniture beetle and death watch beetle infestation. In addition, some timbers were severely affected by the attack with voids being present which affected their structural integrity.
Due to the evidence of this attack and to avoid destructive timber replacement, Cavitytech specified timber resin repairs. These involved ‘de-frassing’ and clearing the voids back to sound timber. A matching piece of oak was found cut and shaped to size. This was to form both the shuttering and capping to encapsulate the Trimol 36 structural grout.
With the shutter timber in place, holes were drilled above the void and the (very liquid) Trimol 36 resin was poured to consolidate the void and return integrity to the affected post. When the resin had cured the sealant was removed and cleaned leaving a very natural appearance.
An important structural repair was effectively carried out with the minimum of disruption and visual impact.
