Loft Insulation
As much as 25% of all the heat lost from an average house is via the roof. In excess of 1 million properties have no loft insulation at all.
Although most homes have loft insulation, the majority have only 100mm or less and require topping up to the present day standard of 270mm, which is the requirement for new homes. The insulation material is rolled between the joists and then maybe applied as a second layer across the joists to avoid cold bridging. By insulating your home you could prevent the emission of around 135 tonnes or more of C02 pollution during your lifetime.
The average saving per year by insulating your walls and loft can be between and 25 and 35% of your fuel bills. As part of the carbon emissions reduction target 2008-2011 (cert) the government has instructed fuel suppliers to offer grants for insulation to reduce energy use in the home. 3 million homes will have their cavity walls and lofts insulated under this scheme.
Grants for loft insulation are based on any existing levels being 60mm or less. Any householder who is over 70 or in receipt of certain income related benefits or tax credits will be entitled to free or reduce grant loft insulation, depending on existing levels of loft insulation material. Everyone else who owns their own home or rents from private landlords will be eligible for a substantial grant towards the cost of insulation. Access to these grants is available directly from CavityTech. It is not necessary to change your fuel supplier in order to qualify, the grants are not means tested and they do not have to be repaid.
