Basement Water Proofing
CavityTech Systems Ltd are one of the premier water-proofing companies in the South East of England. We have successfully carried out many projects working with architects, surveyor, builders and the general public. Our fully qualified surveying team can offer a wide range of effective water-proofing designs and solutions for both new build and existing basements.
There are two main systems available for basement water-proofing. These are either a Cementitious Multi-Coat Render system (Tanking) or a Cavity Drainage Membrane System.
Increasingly over the years, CavityTech Systems have primarily designed and installed cavity drainage membrane systems within basement construction. The high density polypropylene membrane is mechanically fixed to wall, ceiling (if required) and floor surfaces throughout the below-ground structure, and forms an air-gap between the structure and the membrane for the movement of any water vapour. Any water ingress is then collected into channelling of the floor / wall junction, and either directed to a sump chamber or suitable exit point through an open elevation.
The main benefits of cavity drainage membranes are recognised within the industry, and are outlined below:
Preparation - As the membrane is mechanically fixed, there is no reliance on the system to bond with the substrate, so preparation is minimal. These membranes can also be applied to more friable backgrounds, which are often not suitable to receive a cementitious rendering type system.
Depressurising the Structure - The studded membrane design creates a air cavity between the membrane and the substrate, allowing any moisture to move freely. This depressurises the structure, eliminating weak points and ensures that the problem is not forced elsewhere. The most critical part of the system is the floor/wall junction, where we install suitable drainage channelling, to collect and direct any moisture to a suitable point for exit.
Finishing - A membrane installation is often finished using a dry-lining system, enabling electrical and plumbing services to be concealed, and if required, the inclusion of insulation to increase thermal values. As soon as the membrane / lining systems is installed the basement area will feel instantly warmer and drier. Subsequent decoration can be carried out promptly.
Multi-Coat Render systems - (Tanking), these are more often used as a harder wearing finish in areas such as car parking areas, garages and workshops, and are beneficial on convoluted shapes and masonry features.
