Barn Conversion, West Sussex - Waterproofing/Damp-proofing
History
The client required high grade structural waterproofing to a listed farmhouse which was undergoing extensive renovations. Part of the renovation involved lowering the inside floor level to gain head height. Once the floor level was lowered the external ground level was unable to be lowered for structural considerations. Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Cavity Tech designed and installed a robust internal waterproofing system with Newton System 500.
Methodology
The waterproofing project presented itself on two levels with the higher level having earth bearing against the external walls by 500mm on three elevations and the remaining elevation was open to the elements. The lower level of the farmhouse was fully retaining on all aspects. Once the new floor slab was laid, Cavity Tech installed Newton Basedrain around the wall floor junction and then positioned 50mm of closed cell insulation directly to the slab. Once the insulation was in situ, Newton 508 was laid directly on the insulation as a vapour barrier. A further layer of insulation was then installed to upgrade the U values to building regulations standard then a 65mm screed was incorporated.
The upper level of the property was able to be drained out to an open elevation and the lower level was directed into a fully serviced Newton sump and pump to remove the water. The internal walls were lined with a combination of Newton 508 and Newton 508 Mesh membranes to ceiling height on the brick elevations and to sole plate height in the timber framed aspect of build. The meshed membrane was rendered and on the non meshed material an independent studd wall was incorporated.
